Abstract:
Locations in the Upper Clark Fork Basin where wildlife were seen during aerial surveys conducted by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) between 1977 and 2007. The aerial surveys were conducted annually to count and classify wildlife in the area.

The data consist of seven layers with different observation types: Mule Deer, Winter 1991-2003 (288 observations); Mule Deer, Spring 1997-2005 (1339 observations); Mountain Goats, 1993-2007 (50 observations); Moose, Winter 1992-2004 (30 observations); Elk, Winter 1984-2005 (2923 observations); Bighorn Sheep, Winter 1988-2004 (248 observations); and Antelope, Summer 1989-2007 (161 observations).

Each observation record has attribute fields for the number of animals seen, the date, the Deer/Elk hunting district the location was in, and counts of the types of animals. For mule deer in the winter, the types are bucks, does, and fawns. For mule deer in the spring, the types are adults and fawns. for mountain goats, the types are billy, nanny, kid, and unknown. For moose, the types are bulls, cows, calves, and unknown. For elk, the types are bulls, cows, calves, and unclassified. For bighorn sheep, the types are full-curl, 3/4-curl, 1/2-curl, 1/4-curl, ewes, and lambs.

The data are not intended to represent overall or annual distribution. Each individual observation represents one or more animals. Density of observations does not necessarily equal density of animals.
Purpose:
To provide wildlife data for use in the Natural Resource Damage Program (NRDP). The data is intended to aid in NRDP project planning and implementation by identifying key wildlife habitats.

Data are used by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks in their management responsibilities to set hunting seasons, determine population trends, and identify critical habitats. Observations were recorded on data forms and locations either plotted on USFS Maps (Deerlodge National Forest) or recorded by specific location.

Lineage:

Process step:
FWP field data observation forms from 1977 thru 2007 and maps were used to identify GIS locations on BLM 1:100,000 maps. Data was digitized on screen using ArcView 3.2 using the following 1:100,000 scale Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs) as base maps (Missoula East, Elliston, Philipsburg, Butte North, and Butte South). The DRGs were obtained from the Natural Resource Information System at http://nris.mt.gov/gis/.
